English – curriculum information

Reading

At Bude Park Primary School, we believe that reading is an essential life skill and we are committed to enabling our children to become lifelong readers. We believe that every pupil has the ability to learn to read and that they have a fundamental right to access high quality literature from their very first day of school.

We aim to provide children with a literacy-rich environment, high quality texts and inspiring learning opportunities, which will help them to:

  • Gain a life-long enjoyment of reading and books;
  • Read accurately, fluently and with understanding;
  • Be able to read with expression, intonation and automaticity;
  • Develop a good linguistic knowledge of tier 2 vocabulary;
  • Read and respond to a wide range of different types carefully chosen texts, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry;
  • Read fluently, and with confidence, to develop their learning across the wider curriculum and lays the foundations for success in future lines of study and employment.

We have adopted a reading model, which aims to develop children into efficient, effective, thoughtful and strategic readers.  All sessions are interactive and teachers facilitate opportunities for pupils to develop their oracy skills.

We have robust assessment procedures to regularly check progress and identify pupils in need of intervention.

We promote reading for pleasure by exposing children to a range of texts.

Writing

At Bude Park Primary School, we endeavour to create a love for literacy. Bude Park Primary School believes that writing is a key skill for life both inside and out of education and that is why it features across all the subjects taught across our school. Our aim is to provide children with key transferrable writing skills to build on year on year that can be used throughout each phase of their education and beyond.

We want every child to leave Bude Primary School with the skills of an excellent writer who:

  • Has the ability to write with fluency and has an author’s voice;
  • Can think about the impact they want their writing to have on the reader and knows how they will achieve this;
  • Has a sophisticated bank of vocabulary and an excellent knowledge of writing techniques to extend details or description;
  • Can structure and organise their writing to suit the genre they are writing and include a variety of sentence structures;
  • Displays excellent transcription skills that ensure their writing is well presented, punctuated, spelled correctly and neat;
  • Re-reads, edits and improves their writing so every piece of writing they produce is to the best of their ability and better than the last.

Throughout their time at Bude Park Primary School, children develop their skills by exploring a whole range of different genres, with a focus on exploring a range of models of excellence and using these to guide the drafting and editing process. It is important to note that we not only develop a real enjoyment of writing in English lessons but in all subjects across the curriculum. We expect the highest standards of writing and presentation every time a child writes in any subject. We use the best principles taken from strategies such as ‘Talk for Writing’ to teach writing, with the end aim of children being independent writers.
